Awards and Scholarships

Dance New Jersey administers and adjudicates the annual Governor’s Awards for Arts Education – Student Award for Artistic Excellence and Leadership in Dance. Dual members of Dance New Jersey and the National Dance Education Organization may also apply to operate a chapter of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts at their school or studio and are then eligible to apply for NDEO’s National Artistic Merit Leadership and Academic Achievement Award. Leader in Education Award for the Dance To Learn Program

This Principal/school has shown the collaborative efforts of working with a D2L Teaching Artist and Classroom Teachers to integrate the Dance To Learn Program.
This Principal/school has advocated for the Dance To Learn Program to be facilitated in his/her school and has supported this program with financial commitment.
This four year Dance Residency program has been integrated into this school's curriculum across multiple grade levels beginning in grade 2 and progressing student learning through grade 5.
This Principal/School demonstrates a commitment to the art form by working collectively with teachers, the teaching artist and the students to bring the highest level of dance education to the district.

Student Award for Artistic Excellence and Leadership in Dance

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Candidates must: A. Demonstrate artistry and technical excellence in the field of dance. B. Demonstrate outstanding leadership related to dance in the classroom, in the community, and/or at the state level C. Be a New Jersey high school junior or senior with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher (out of 4). 

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCESS: A. Nomination narrative by a teacher (public school, private school or private studio); B. Student Essay (maximum 300 words) Essay must address the question: "How have you come to appreciate dance and what are your dance-related goals?" C. Student resume/vita, including training, performance experience, dance5related activities in school, the community or on the state level;
D. Video documenting Student's Artistic and Technical Excellence The video must not exceed 8 minutes and may include a maximum of two dance genre (ballet, modern, jazz, tap or artistic and performance-based dance from another nation/culture.) At least one piece must be a self-choreographed solo work; if using a group work, applicant must be easily identifiable. Information about the choreographer of the piece(s) must be provided. All nominations, written and video materials must be submitted electronically.
